In recent years, Place d'Youville was the theatre of major archeological digs. Located between Saint-Pierre and McGill streets, in front of the first fire station, which today houses the Centre d'histoire de Montréal, Place d'Youville constitutes the inaugural site of Ville-Marie. Important laws were passed there, such as the one establishing responsible government in 1848. But one year later, a violent fire ravaged the building. The two parliamentary libraries were razed. The digs of recent years uncovered, among other things, artefacts that will find a new home at Esplanade de la Cité, underground galleries that will be accessible to visitors. The exhibits will provide a better understanding of the city's founding period and will make the area even more popular.
